"UNIFIG: Universal configuration software for Real-time tag-based applications"

IDX UNIFIG is an application that can be used to seamlessly configure real-time, tag-based applications such as SCADA systems and historians. It allows tag configurations present in an existing system to be quickly migrated into another system. This is especially beneficial where large, complex configurations are present. UNIFIG greatly simplifies the initial set up of plant information systems and the maintenance of these systems.

Benefit of UNIFIG include:

Minimise tag configuration time on real-time system source-target pairs

Minimise tag configuration errors

Addition of tags to source system can be quickly replicated to target systems without labourious tag configurations

UNIFIG operates on the principle that that tag configuration data is obtained from a source system. This data is converted to a common XML dataset and then exported to a destination application.

As shown in the figure above, configuration data can be obtained from any source (SCADA, OPC Server and Historian). UNIFIG interfaces natively with the required source system and converts selected tag configuration data into a general format. The data can be exported to another system which can also be a SCADA or historian.

Examples of systems that can be used for the source or the destination include:

  • Siemens SIMATIC WinCC

  • Wonderware IndustrialSQL Server

  • Wonderware InTouch®

  • OSIsoft PI

  • Adroit

  • Citect

  • IDX Historian

  • IDX OPC Server and Client

Configuration Scenario

A typical example configuration transformation scenario is shown in the figure below:

In this scenario, a site has a WinCC system that handles the main plant control. On the same plant, there is an Wonderware Industrial SQL Server (InSQL) server that logs tag values from various Siemens PLCs.

It could happen that tags are added, removed or modified on the PLCs via WinCC due to plant changes. Synchronising these data changes with other plant systems is usually done manually which can be a time consuming task.

UNIFIG can automatically retrieve the current configuration setup from the WinCC configuration database and also examine the existing InSQL configuration. UNIFIG performs a comparison between the data in WinCC and the data in InSQL Server and the relevant tag data will be added or modified in the InSQL server such that the configurations match.

The net result of this action is that the InSQL server will still be able to retrieve data for a tag if it has changed on the source or be able to start logging data for any new tags that have been added.
